Falling for Cranberries: Explore Cottage Country & Bake Cranberry Lemon Scones

As the summer sun fades and crisp autumn air rolls in, there's no better time to explore the charm of Ontario's cottage country. The vibrant greens of Muskoka and the Georgian Bay area are replaced by a stunning palette of reds, oranges, and yellows as the trees turn, making it the perfect backdrop for leisurely country drives and weekend getaways.

If you're like us, fall is a time to slow down, embrace the change in season, and get outside to soak up the natural beauty around us. Muskoka, Collingwood, Thornbury, Meaford, and the surrounding areas offer the best of both worlds—breathtaking views and a laid-back vibe. The summer crowds are gone, leaving the serene calm that so many of us crave.

Take a Scenic Drive and Explore Real Estate Opportunities

Fall is the ideal time to enjoy those picturesque drives through winding roads, past serene lakes, and under canopies of colorful leaves. Whether you're heading up Highway 400 toward Muskoka or taking a meandering drive along the scenic routes of Collingwood and Thornbury, you'll be surrounded by the stunning autumn landscape.

While you're enjoying the view, why not explore real estate opportunities in these peaceful communities? With fewer tourists, fall is the perfect time to consider a permanent move or a weekend retreat in one of Ontario’s most beautiful areas. The market is quieter, but there are still hidden gems to be found—whether you're looking for a cozy cottage or a spacious family home.

If you're thinking about buying property in cottage country, we at ASP Group are here to guide you through the process. From Muskoka’s rugged charm to Collingwood's four-season appeal, there’s something for everyone.

Upcoming Fall Events: Get Out and Enjoy the Season

Cottage country isn’t just about the views—it’s also home to a variety of fall events that capture the spirit of the season. One of our favorites is the Bala Cranberry Festival located in the serene village of Bala, ON, taking place this year from October 18th to 20th. This festival celebrates the harvest season with cranberry-inspired foods, crafts, and fun for the whole family. You can even tour a working cranberry farm and sample fresh cranberry products.

Here are a few other fall events in the area that are worth checking out:
Apple Harvest Festival in Blue Mountain: Celebrate the region's famous apple harvest from October 12th to 14th. Enjoy live music, cider tastings, and more.

Muskoka Oktoberfest: Experience the tastes and sounds of Muskoka this fall! Save the dates for October 25th and 26th to enjoy a vibrant music, culinary, and beer festival, hosted by participating breweries and restaurants across Bracebridge, Gravenhurst, Huntsville, Lake of Bays, Muskoka Lakes, and Georgian Bay.

Agora: Path of Lights in Blue Mountain: AGORA is an unusual and magical space inspired by storytellers and cycles of life in nature. As participants walk this circular path, they will encounter a series of interactive lighting installations based on the five elements of air, space, earth, water and fire. This event runs September 3-October 31st. Whether you’re here for a day trip or spending a weekend, these events are the perfect excuse to enjoy the season—and maybe even find your dream property along the way.

A Taste of Fall: Cranberry Lemon Scones Recipe

What better way to celebrate the season than by baking something with one of fall's favorite ingredients—cranberries! These Cranberry Lemon Scones are the perfect mix of tart and sweet, making them a cozy addition to your morning routine or an afternoon treat after a country drive.

Cranberry Lemon Scones Recipe

Ingredients:

2 cups all-purpose flour1/4 cup granulated sugar1 tablespoon baking powder1/2 teaspoon saltZest of 1 lemon1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed3/4 cup fresh cranberries (or dried, if you prefer)2/3 cup heavy cream1 large egg1 teaspoon vanilla extract2 tablespoons coarse sugar (optional, for sprinkling)For the glaze:

1 cup powdered sugar2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice1 tablespoon milk (adjust for consistency)Instructions:

1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and lemon zest.
3. Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs.
4. Gently fold in the cranberries.
5. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the cream, egg, and vanilla extract. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined—don’t overmix!
6. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and shape it into a circle, about 1 inch thick. Cut the dough into 8 wedges and transfer them to the prepared baking sheet.
7. If desired, sprinkle the tops of the scones with coarse sugar for a crunchy finish.
8. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown.
9. While the scones cool, prepare the glaze by whisking together the powdered sugar, lemon juice, and milk. Drizzle the glaze over the cooled scones.

Enjoy these Cranberry Lemon Scones warm, perhaps with a cup of tea as you sit by the window, watching the leaves change outside.
